The Sudan, sometimes called North Sudan after the independence of South Sudan, is bordered by Egypt, the Red Sea, and the Sahara Desert. The Nile River divides the country, which has been independence since 1956. Since 1983, fundamentalist Islamic law has been established in the country.

Letters of invitation are often required for entry into Sudan. Certain travel and photography permits may be required as well.
