Located in the South Pacific, Vanuatu is a volcanic archipelago that has the Solomon Islands, Fiji, and New Caledonia as neighbors. Inhabited by the Melanesians, Fernandes de Queiros is credited with the discovery of this island nation in 1606. For more than a century, France, Britain, and Spain jointly managed the archipelago until the Republic of Vanuatu was founded in 1980.
There are essentially two options available for holidays in Vanuatu. You can choose to stay in Port Vila or you can choose to stay somewhere other than Port Vila. Stay in the city if you’re looking for a resort-like experience and atmosphere. You’ll be able to experience some of the island nation’s culture while enjoying plenty of beach time.
Staying outside of the city provides better access to the adventures the island can provide. It’s a great way to plan a trip to Tanna, for example, so that you can tour the famous Yasur Volcano. On Pentecost Island, you can even participate in the local land diving rituals that are similar to bungee jumping. Some local performers jump from a height of 30m without any safety equipment, except for 2-3 vines wrapped around their legs.
You’ll also want to dive the Coolidge during your stay in Vanuatu. The SS President Cooledge was a luxury ocean liner that was completed in 1931. While serving as a troopship, it was struck by mines in October 1942 and sank. The bow is at a depth of 21m, while the stern is at 73m. It is now a protected wreck where coral, reef fish, and barracuda can be seen.

On Tanna Island you can visit the incredible Mount Yasur a volcano which has been erupting almost continuously for more than 800 years. Be sure to bring your camera with you, because the views are enough to take your breath away.
For the best snorkelling adventures, you should make tracks to Mele Island, known locally as Hideaway Island. The crystal clear waters are perfect for viewing and exploring the colourful coral atoll, and for obtaining a glimpse of the fascinating marine life. Even if you are an inexperienced diver, you should take the opportunity to view this stunning location in greater detail.
One of the many delights of a holiday to Vanuatu is the opportunity to travel around. While there are a great many famous attractions, there are so many hidden gems that are just waiting to be discovered. The sensible option for the curious tourist is to hire a car, scooter or bicycle and to simply take to the road. There’s so much to see, but so little time to do so!
