If you are planning to visit Sicily, then there’s a good chance that you’ll be spending a little time in Messina. It’s located on the northeast corner of the island and this ancient city has numerous ancient buildings to explore despite an 1908 earthquake that devastated the city. A fountains tour is a great way to become introduced to the city, with four fountains available to see that date back to the 16^th century.

The Villa Mazzini is another must-see opportunity with a visit to Messina. Head north from the Piazza Antonello Corso Cavour and pass the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele to reach these public gardens. There are plenty of trees that shade the walkways and numerous statues will greet you as walk. Head west from there and you’ll be able to tour San Francesco d’Assisi, which dates back to the 13^th century.

Far and away, however, the most popular site in the city is the Cathedral. It stands on the Piazza del Duomo and was originally built in the 12^th century. It’s been rebuilt twice, once after the earthquake and a second time after an Allied bombing run in World War II. The reconstruction has kept the Cathedral true to its original architecture and it is all on a pedestrian-only walkway so you can take a leisurely stroll.

Then wind down your stay on the Viale Italia. This panoramic road begins just west of the University and will take you above the city, through some of the island’s old fortification, and end down on the coastal road. It’s just another reminder that once you visit Messina, you will always long for a return trip.
