Discover Naples

Naples is the perfect destination for those looking for a weekend break or alternatively spend a week here and visit the ruins of Pompeii and the stunning Amalfi coast in one trip. Naples is a fantastic destination for lovers of lively culture; the Centro Storico – the city’s historic centre – is home to great sights including Museo Cappella Sansevero, Teatro di San Carlo, Museo del Tesoro di San Gennaro and the Gesu Nuovo church.

When most people think of Italian history, the first city that springs to mind is usually Rome, although with Naples having been founded by the ancient Greeks and thriving during the Middle Ages, it really does give the capital a run for its money in terms of historic sites and attractions. Also famed for being the birthplace of the pizza, you can expect to wander through the streets here enjoying the delicious smell of fresh pizza being made through the quaint pizzeria’s that are prevalent in the city.Visiting one of the city’s most authentic pizza spots, such as Pizzeria da Michele, is a must. It only makes so much each day so, when the pizza’s gone, it’s gone! Taste pizza like you’ve never tasted before here, not to mention the Neapolitan gelato too!

Naples is also the best base from which to explore the incredible Amalfi Coast; only an hour’s drive from the city, you can easily spend a week exploring the stunning coastal towns of Positano, Amalfi, Praiano and Ravello. Or take a day trip by boat across to Capri, which affords the most incredible views of the coast.

Travel to Pozzuoli

Originally built by the Greek, Pozzuoli is a community that has over 2,000 years of history that can be experienced while walking down its streets. It was home to the largest ancient naval fleet in the world, was one of the world’s largest trading hubs, and even became the site of the world’s first type of concrete thanks to its unique volcanic sand. Things means there are plenty of things to do in Pozzuoli during your stay.

The Macellum of Pozzuoli

The Greek architecture at this site is evident, but the purpose of it was not nearly so clear when it was first discovered. A statue of Serapis made many believe the site was a temple, but in reality the Macellum was an ancient marketplace. The three marble columns still stand majestically tall, though erosion has taken some of that grandeur away.

Villa Avellino

There are only a few urban parks in Pozzuoli, but Villa Avellino is by far the best of them. You’ll be able to see several additional Roman ruins here as you walk around the area. Don’t forget to make a wish at the still operational Roman face fountain

The Entrance to Hell

Virgil mentions that Lake Avernus is the entrance to Hell in his sixth book of Aeneid, most likely because of the sulfur gas that emanates from the lake. It’s a volcanic crater lake that was once even the site of a naval base during Roman times. The world’s first major road tunnel was also built here, built in the Roman time for chariots and used up until the 1940s.

Pozzuoli has historical and religious references that help to support a visit that will be fun and relaxing. Whether you stay here a few hours or for a few days, you will fall in love with this beautiful community.
