You can find Rodez in Southern France and the first image that comes to mind when thinking about this community are the fields of red poppies that surround the community in the Spring and early Summer. It is a community that is filled with classic beauty and has existed in some form since the 5th century BC when the Celts were in the area.
The Romans fortified the community and a number of different occupation forces have called it home over the years. If you love being able to immerse yourself into history while still enjoying the modern amenities of life, the Rodez definitely has something for you. Where could your journey in this lovely community take you?
This cathedral in Rodez is a national monument of France and you’ll be able to see why from the first moment you see it. The town had Christianity brought to it around the 4th century and the first mention of this cathedral is dated to the year 516. A second cathedral was built around the turn of the 11th century and then the town decided to build a third cathedral from scratch in 1276. It took nearly 300 years to complete the cathedral because of the 100 Years War and the Black Death, but the work is absolutely breathtaking. There’s a unity of style in the red sandstone and the bell tower stands nearly 90 meters tall.
For a look at art that is a bit more modern, you’ll want to make your way to the Denys-Puech Museum. This art gallery was founded by the famous sculptor and was completed in 1910. The permanent collection showcases works from the region, with the two biggest names being Viala and Bompard. There are also regular temporary exhibits that feature regional contemporary art as well.
For a new museum experience, the Grand Rodez has been open since May 2014 and is dedicated to the Outrenoir paintings of Pierre Soulages. It features 30 large scale works of art that have been lent by other museums and Soulages personally selected the works that are on display here. It is one of the most complete exhibitions of this famous contemporary artist.
One of the most exciting aspects about a visit to Rodez is the three weekly farmer’s markets that are held throughout the community. Make your way to one of them On Wednesday morning, Friday evening, or Saturday morning to enjoy a number of local fares and sounveniers. Make sure you pick up some fouace if it is available fresh because this sweet bread is simply fantastic! Many local bakeries serve it as well if you can’t find it at the market.
You’ll also want to take the opportunity to see the Church of Saint-Amans if you get the opportunity. It was rebuilt in 1761, but the church itself dates back to the 13th century. It has an interior that is distinctly Baroque and the choir stalls depict the various reported miracles of Saint Amans. There’s a statue of the trinity on display here as well for a little extra added artistic value to your visit.
What could Rodez hold for you? Add these items to your itinerary and you’re certain to have a magical holiday in this wonderful community.
