Located in the Cantabria region, Santander is a coastal community that offers some stunning vistas and some excellent adventure opportunities.
Many first head toward the Cape Mayor Lighthouse to get an incredible view, while the beaches of the seaside resorts are the perfect way to spend a warm, sunny day. Make your way to El Sardinero for a great time, but if it is too crowded for your taste, then La Peninsula de la Magdalena might be a good secondary option.
After you’ve enjoy this initial taste of what Santander has to offer, you’ll undoubtedly be ready for much more! Are you ready to experience everything this community is ready to offer you?
Central Santander is the perfect place to explore because there are a number of beautiful plazas to enjoy during your journey. The Porticada might be the very best, however, even if it isn’t the oldest of the bunch. Built after the great fire that occurred in 1941, there are now 64 porticoes in this plaza to enjoy as you take in the sights. Walk just a bit east from here and you’ll end up in the Plaza de Pombo that offers a lot more space. If you’re looking for nightlife, then the Plaza de Canadio is the place to be!
If strolling through a beautiful green space is more suited to you, then you’ll want to get to the Jardines de Pereda. They’re named after one of the most famous Cantabrian writers in history and his key work, the Escenas Montanesas, is illustrated in stone and bronze in the gardens to enjoy.
If you’re looking for a good museum experience, then the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art is the the place to go. There’s a large collection here that can best be described as “eclectic” and the work, although described as modern, dates back to the 16th century. The focus is on Spanish art, but there are a number of unique international pieces on display as well.
The tapas movement is spreading around the world, but having them in one of the places that created the small dish concept is something that you will enjoy for some time. Head to La Conveniente for the experience because this bodega is massive and you’ll be surrounded by huge wooden beams and pillars that are complimented by very high walls made of stone. Call the wine collection “extensive” doesn’t do it justice! Just cozy up to the bar and enjoy everything!
Because Santander is a coastal community, there are a number of great seafood options available as well. The one that gets our recommendation is the Bar Del Puerto. It starts with the view of the waterfront and it ends with a menu filled with locally sourced dishes that are out of this world. You’ll be spending some extra money to dine here, but the value in the Catch of the Day is literally overwhelming!
If you’re going to experience Santander for yourself in the coming days, then take a few moments to add these suggestions to your trip. That way you’ll guarantee that your time in this community will provide you with everything you need!
