Bruck an der Mur has a story that is all too familiar. In 1792, a fire ravage the local castle of Landskron. After the fire, just 2 out of 166 homes were left standing. A community that had been founded in the 9th century had been completely decimated and forced to rebuild.

You can make your way up to Landskron to see the ruins of the castle. Groomed trails take you along some of the defensive walls that were built into the hillside. You’ll get a chance to stretch your legs, see a beautiful panorama of the city, and have a quiet place to reflect.

In the center of the city is the Kornmesser house, which was built in the 15th century with a Venetian style. On the grounds is an iron well that has a spectacular lace dome. The area has been created to feel like a public square, with several sculptures, small eateries, and local shopping to enjoy.

Then make your way to Weintental to enjoy some hiking trails that lead through a nature conservation center. It was established in 1988 to be a refuge for wildlife that had suffered an injury and needed a place to recover. Animals that are seized, either young or injured, are rehabilitated with the goal of releasing them back to the wild. More than 150 protected animals are currently on the grounds. It is open daily, April thru October, and a small entry fee is required.
