The capital of Croatia may be inland, away from the famous Dalmatian Coast, but there are plenty of reasons to book flights to Zagreb and enjoy it as a city break or before heading to the sea. It is dominated by fairy tale style Austro-Hungarian architecture, with spires and terracotta tiled roofs dominating the skyline.

At ground level, the history is just as evident, making it a fascinating place to spend a few days. A jewel yet to be discovered by the tourist masses, Zagreb has a laidback attitude and a very authentic feel. Its pedestrian streets, outdoor cafes and parks make it a wonderful place to stroll, while a plethora of museums and galleries mean there is enough art and aestheticism to keep culture vultures entertained.

If you like art then you are well catered for in Zagreb as there are a host of galleries spread across the city. The building which houses the Croatian Association of Artists is a work of art in itself and is well worth a trip.

For something a little different visit the unique Museum of Broken Relationships, which contains a fascinating collection of tokens from loves lost. If you like street art then check out the 450-metre-long Graffiti Wall in Branimirova Street, the artwork is constantly changing so no two visits are ever the same.

Museum of Contemporary Art, see Double Slide by the Belgian artist Carsten Holler and 12,000 other works at the Museum of Contemporary Art. The modern building, designed by Igor Franic, is instantly recognisable in the Novi Zagreb area of the city.

For great 360-degree views of the city, climb the spiral staircase of the Lotrscak Tower and gain access to the wooden deck. The structure itself dates back to the 13th century and was built to protect Zagreb from invasion by the Turks. Since 1877, a cannon has been set off at noon daily.

Take a trip out of the city and visit Plitvice lakes and take in some stunning scenery. The lakes are about two hours away from the city centre, and there are plenty of transfers and excursions available.
