Aitutaki is a popular tourism island in the Cook Islands and covers an area of just 18 square kilometres. It’s known for the beautiful turquoise waters of its lagoon, stunning beaches and deserted islets. The main town is Arutanga, and altogether, just over 2,000 people live on the island. Maximum temperatures throughout the year are around 30°C, with the temperature of the surrounding South Pacific Ocean not far off. The island is reached by small plane from the neighbouring island of Rarotonga, a flight of about 40 minutes, as there are no direct international flights to this piece of paradise.

There is a good deal of accommodation to choose from in the main town of Arutanga, making it a suitable location to base yourself for your holiday on this perfect island. The town’s facilities include a shopping area, a telecoms office and an internet café. Arutanga’s other advantage is its only six kilometres from the island’s airport. Arutanga accommodation is dotted around the place, and even out on the ocean, in the form of floating bungalows. There are seven villages on the island where you can stay: Amuri, Ureia, Reureu, Nikaupara, Vaipae, Tautu and Vaipeka.

Best of Aitutaki

What to see and do in Aitutaki ?

Aitutaki is paradise on Earth. It’s the stuff of dreams. This sleepy island is a place where you can really forget about all the nagging problems back home and enjoy one of the finest places on the planet. It’s an area of outrageous beauty that will literally take your breath away.

Among the things you can do during your stay on Aitutaki is – absolutely nothing. In this picture-postcard paradise, why would you want to do anything other than luxuriate on the inviting white sands and soak up the generous sun, taking dips in the azure waters to cool down? It’s true, unadulterated bliss, and you don’t have to feel one bit guilty about lazing about, because that’s what you’re there for.

But when you want to take a break from all that somnolent lying around, a cruise of the lagoon is a good way to get going again. Many cruises stop at One Foot Island, a popular spot, including for weddings, that’s possibly so named due to its shape.

You might not think it, but Aitutaki has a golf club. It’s a 9-hole course that, given the stunning setting, must be played by any golfer.

Being surrounded by some of the most amazing waters anywhere, including what’s in them, scuba diving is a popular activity, and tourists can book dives with a number of local operators. Divers can see an extraordinary array of handsome creatures beneath the ocean, including turtles and giant clams.

The local islanders are exceedingly warm and hospitable people, and revel in expressing themselves in the wonderful songs and dances of the Pacific. Many performances are staged for the benefit of tourists. The fire dance is especially spectacular.

Feast on the island’s delicious delicacies, including tuna with coconut milk and a banana dessert that’s cooked in the ground. Make sure to book in advance at the more popular restaurants or you may not get a table.

If you want to stay up and party the night away, you’ll be warmly welcomed by the staff at the island’s bars. It all adds up to one of the most enjoyable and memorable of holiday experiences.
