Franz Josef has a very varied annual weather pattern, although cold in winter it experiences quite moderate temperatures the rest of the year making it a great place to visit all year round.

The town of Franz Josef is definitely most well known for the 12km long Franz Josef Glacier. With visitors flocking to the glacier every year it is a must see or do activity while visiting this great town.

You can book guided Franz Josef glacier walks where there is a huge range of trips taking visitors up on to the majestic glacier. From valley walks to ice climbing and heli hiking, there is a trip to suit every persons ability.

Get stunning aerial views of the Mount Cook and Westland National Parks all from the comfort of your own Air Safari tour. From there you can see down onto both Franz Josef and Cook Glaciers, the safari even land close by to the main divide so you can explore the area, make sure you rug up though as it is mighty cold up there.

Whataroa and the Perth Rivers are located just 20 minutes north of Franz Josef and are two of the best day trips, with whitewater rafting activities as the main attraction it is a must do for those adrenaline seeking junkies. Plummet down rapids while being surrounded by stunning scenery.

Make a visit to the eye-catching Lake Mapourika where the water is black in colour and provides superb reflections, it also has boating facilities and some pleasant picnic spots.
