Vast, multifaceted Canada is a tapestry of many cultures, fast-paced urban centers and huge swaths of wilderness. A Canada vacation could have dozens of different itineraries, but there are several cannot-miss destinations and sites that all types of vacationers love. The Maritime region of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island is known for Celtic music, brisk ocean air and dramatic coastal scenery.

Visit sophisticated Montreal and romantic Quebec City in the province of Quebec, Canada’s French heart. International Toronto, the financial and cultural hub of Canada, boasts world-class dining and entertainment. Experience thrills of a different sort in the Canadian Rockies at Banff National Park in Alberta. Vancouver, on Canada’s Pacific coast, is famous for its restaurant scene, hip feel and spectacular natural beauty.

Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and New Brunswick on Canada’s Atlantic coast have small cities with hotel and motel chains. Resorts and family-run hotels are found in the more rural areas.

When staying in Quebec City, choose between historic auberges, or inns, and family-friendly chains or luxe hotels. In Montreal, choose between elegant small hotels and historic inns in the old section, or a larger hotel downtown, close to shopping museums and entertainment.

In downtown Toronto you’ll find a range of choices from moderately priced chains to high-end selections. To be within walking distance of most attractions, stay near Dundas Square; choose a hotel in the Yorkville neighborhood for more of a residential feel.

In Banff National Park, select from motels, historic inns, and large mountain resorts, and in Vancouver you can either stay within walking distance of attractions, or in the quieter Stanley Park area. Vancouver has every type of accommodation from ultra hip boutique hotels, to sleek high-rise chains, and quaint inns.

There are more places in Canada to see than one vacation can hold. Drive the Cabot Trail in Cape Breton in Nova Scotia for the gorgeous ocean views, charming villages and the opportunity shop for local crafts and eat freshly-caught seafood. Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick are known for fields of colorful lupine in the summer and dramatic tides.

In Montreal, survey the city from its highest point, Parc du Mont-Royal. Next, stroll down the cobblestone streets of Old Montreal to the spectacular Notre Dame Basilique, and Pointe a Calliere Archaeology and History Museum, where you take an elevator down to an archaeological dig that’s unearthed 17th century artifacts. Romantic Quebec City, the only walled city north of Mexico, is full of military history sites and exceptional restaurants.

Most visitors grab an overview of Toronto from the landmark CN Tower: at over 1,800 feet it’s the tallest structure in the Western Hemisphere. Families love the Royal Ontario Museum with its dinosaur exhibit, and no trip to this hockey-mad city is complete without a visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Save a few hours to do some high-end window shopping in Yorkville, or check out the unique shops in Kensington market.

Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies is wonderland for nature lovers. Top hiking spots include Parker Ridge Trail and the trails around Lake Louise. An easier way to see the view is by riding the Banff Gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain. To view wildlife, drive the Icefields Parkway where you’re sure to spot bighorn sheep, elk, and moose.

In hip Vancouver, start your visit at Canada Place for an interactive overview of the city. Granville Island Public Market is great for lunch and shopping, and the historic Gastown area is the place to find a pub. Other Vancouver must-dos are admiring the beautiful flowers at Queen Elizabeth Park, and taking the Skyride to the top of Grouse Mountain for a view of the city, mountains and ocean.
