Travel to Greve in Chianti

Greve in Chianti can be found in the heart of Tuscany, just a short drive from both Siena and Florence. Named for the river that flows through it, this is the principal commune for the Chianti wine district. Well off the main road, you’ll find it to be a quiet destination that provides you with an authentic Italian experience.

For much of its history, Greve in Chianti has been an independent town. Since the 11th century, a Franciscan monastery has been part of the city center. Within the triangular main plaza, you’ll find a centuries-old market that has served the castle, the town, and nearby communities. As you shop, be sure to enjoy the Medieval buildings, such as the 11th century Chiesa Santa Croce. About 2 kilometers from the city center is the Castle of Verrazzano. It sits on a high hill, just under 350m, and is believed to have been built by the Lombards. In the 17th century, it was turned into a villa. From the old manor, a tower constructed in the 13th century remains.

A visit to the Pieve of San Leolino is also a must-have item on your itinerary. Its earliest reference is from 982 and scriptural fragments found within the church suggest it is even older. The current building was completed in the 12th century and fully restored in 1942. When visiting Tuscany, make Greve in Chianti a top priority.
