Located centrally in North Zealand, Hillerod is one of the best-kept secrets which Denmark offers. It’s just a short trip from Copenhagen and offers a Medieval charm that is second-to-none in the world today. The city was first mentioned in the 16^th century and its location has always been of strategic value. Because of this, Hillerod was heavily fortified in its early days. One of the landmarks in the city, Frederiksborg Castle, is a testament to the defensive structures added to the city during the days of the Renaissance.

The castle is situated on three different islets. As the castle was originally constructed, a large, formal garden helped to create unity with the structures. Much of what you see features a Baroque flavor to it. Much of the castle had to be rebuilt in 1859 after a massive fire, though the renovation is quite authentic and based on plans and paintings that were available. By 1882, the castle was fully restored and would become the Danish Museum of Natural History. Be sure to visit the Audience Chamber and the Chapel, as these were spared the fire and offer a glimpse of what the original castle was like.

Another option to visit is Esrum Abbey, which was founded in the 12^th century. The entire complex has been restored and the surviving buildings are now listed as national historic monuments. Be sure to see the watermill during your visit. There are occasional Medieval re-enactments held there as well. Hillerod offers you the chance to step back into history and relive the stories of our ancestors. At the same time, you get the chance to see more of how the city is evolving into a modern masterpiece. It is the perfect chance to choose your own adventure.
