Klosterneuburg might not feature on many travel brochures, but this stunning community in the newly-formed Tulln District of Austria is rich in culture and history. Home to the Klosterneuburg Monastery, built in 1114, visitors have access to the Danube River, the Vienna Woods Range, and stunning vistas.
You’re very close to Vienna and all of its majestic offerings as well. Klosterneuburg is also the center of the region’s wine growing industry. Several vintners and taverns offer local specialties that highly the unique conditions of the region.
At the monastery, you’ll still see the 12th century Augustinian influences on display. Be sure to view the Verdun Altar in the Chapel of St. Leopold, made in 1181 by Nicholas of Vedun. Made of 45 gilded copper plates, they were initialed intended to serve the monastery as panels, but were constructed into the altar around the 14th century. Although many of the structures were repaired or restored after the war in the 1940s, it is still an amazing sight to see. What is even more remarkable about the monastery is that only 1/8 of the original plans for the complex were actually finished.
If you stay in the city, be sure to visit the Stadtmuseum after you take the time to tour the monastery. It is a chance to get to know the local culture a little bit better as you explore the history of the city and the region. Temporary art exhibitions and other features are part of the experience as well. Klosterneuburg may be overshadowed by Vienna in terms of marketing power, but it holds its own for those who love to seek out new experiences.
