One of the most famous sights in Lucerne is the Chapel Bridge, or the Kapellbrücke, which dates back to the 14^th Century. It’s a wooden footbridge that stretches across the Reuss River and is the world’s oldest surviving truss bridge. Not only is it also the oldest covered bridge in all of Europe, but it is also ranked as one of Switzerland’s primary tourist attractions.

Inside the walkways of the bridge are small triangular murals or paintings that date back to the 17^th Century that depict the history of Lucerne. Unfortunately a fire in 1993 destroyed portions of the bridge and some of the artwork and those scars are still evident on the bridge, two decades later.
