Located in the Wallonia region of Belgium, Namur makes up part of the Meuse Citadel group. It can be found where the Meuse and Sambre rivers confluence, with three different regions coming together at this location.

Because of this centralization, Namur grew as a Celtic trading settlement, had Roman influences, and eventually grew into a modern community after a castle was established there in the 10th century.

The citadel is the primary attraction of the city, with its views offering a beautiful vista that overlooks the entire region. The city has a belfry that is part of the world heritage site grouping of the belfries of France and Belgium and a distinctive 18th century cathedral.

Local culture is promoted on a regular basis in Namur, with unique events and festivals held to commemorate historical events or cultural practices. Once unique opportunity that shouldn’t be missed occurs on the third Sunday of every September. This is when the “Fight for the Golden Stilt” is held. Two teams dress in Medieval-era clothing while standing on stilts and battle each other in the main square.

An international film festival has been held in Namur annually since 1986 and there are music festivals that take place each year as well.
