Paihia is an adrenaline junkie’s paradise, with every water sport and activity under the sun it is well worth a visit for this alone. Paihia is the base stepping stone into the magnificent Bay of Islands and with over 100 to choose from you are sure to have a good holiday.

Paihia’s experiences warm summers and moderate winters. Known for its base point to explore the Bay of Islands and its beautiful waters, Paihia specialises in a huge variety of water sports and activities. You can usually book most activities through either your accommodation or from the main wharf. Why not take a ferry to Russell, one of the other major Bay of Islands mainland destination

Why not meander down to the beautiful Paihia Harbour, there is an abundance of things to do and see here, take a walk through the park, book a tour in the information centre close by or jump on a ferry over to quaint Russell on the other side of the peninsula.

There are opportunities to swim with dolphins or if you are feeling more adventurous dive into the deep depths of the two shipwrecks that are scattered along the sea floor and reef. You can also snorkel and explore the amazing reefs of the Bay of Islands where you can see the amazing underwater life or take a boat trip to see the dolphins in the area.

Paihia has all kinds of restaurants ranging from quality fish and chips eaten in the bay inside an old fishing ship, gastro pub grub and those famous New Zealand breakfasts. You can fine dine in the one of the waterfront restaurants or just sit in one of the many cafés and watch the world go by.

There is also a great range of wine and food tours available. Paihia regularly play host to a great selection of festivals including, the annual Bay of Islands Food and Wine festival, the Paihia Summer festival and the hilarious Great Bay of Islands Bathtub Racing Classic where you transform your bathtub into a speedboat and race to the finish line.

Waitangi, the historic settlement is located to the North of Paihia. Other close by areas well worth a visit include Haruru Falls and Watea located to the West and the small settlement town of Te Haumi, located to the South. All these day trips are the icing on the cake for what Paihia has to offer.
