The Western Australia town of Pemberton is named one of its earliest settlers called Pemberton Walcott, who arrived in the area in 1862. The town is in the southwest of the state and is surrounded by beautiful karri forest. Karri trees, a native eucalypt, are among the tallest in the world, and certainly the tallest in Australia, shooting up to 90 metres.
There are five national parks in the area, and there are rivers and dams with beaches where you can picnic while enjoying this most pristine of natural environments. Pemberton is also known for its Yeagarup Dunes, the biggest landlocked ones in the southern hemisphere and moving at a rate of four metres a year.
Pemberton is a nature-lover’s paradise, brimming with vivid and raw scenes of towering karri trees and wonderful rivers, lakes and dams. It’s the perfect location to go exploring through the ancient forests and really feel in touch with a pure natural world that’s fast disappearing in other places. A holiday in this charming place will leave you invigorated.

What to see and do in Pemberton ?
Pembroke’s temperatures are slightly cooler than the rest of the region, but can still hit around 26°C in the summer while falling to as low as 7°C in the winter. It’s a good wine-growing climate, and there are wineries dotted all around the area. Visitors can go on wine tours and see the vineyards for themselves, as well as tasting the delicious results of the grapes. Pemberton wineries have gained a reputation for producing exceptional pinot noir, merlot and shiraz, as well as chardonnay and sauvignon blanc.
In this highly forested area, one of the main attractions in Pemberton is… a tree. There’s actually three of them, each one a well-regarded tourist attraction in its own right. They started out decades ago as lookout towers to see if there were fires in the forests.
The trees are climbable and still have a lookout platform atop them. The Gloucester Tree is in Gloucester National Park, just 2 km from town. It’s 61 metres to the top of this enormous karri tree. Even taller, at 75 metres, is the Dave Evans Bicentennial Tree in Warren National Park, about a 15 minute drive away. Also around 15 minutes from Pemberton is the Diamond Tree. It’s between Manjimup and Pemberton and is the shortest of the three at 51 metres. A permit is required to enter the national parks and can be purchased from the Pemberton Visitor Centre in town.
If you’d like a round or two of golf during your stay, there’s a three par course with grassed greens and an 18-hole sand green. You can cool off in Pemberton Pool, which is a short walk from town and is nestled among the stunning karri trees.
Fishing is extremely popular in the area, and trout and marron – a type of freshwater crayfish – are abundant. Visitors can catch their own in ponds on trout farms, and have them for dinner with a glass of wine purchased directly from the wineries.
