What to see and do in Providence ?

Much of Providence’s attractions are condensed into four neighborhoods with distinct personalities, each with an atmosphere to suit your vacation. The Downtown area puts visitors in the heart of the city where visitors are very close to the largest transportation hub, Kennedy Plaza. The buzzing neighborhood of Federal Hill is known for its nightlife that will keep you going late into the night. College hill, home to Brown University, retains a unique feel as it is home to several eclectic shops and restaurants. If you want to get away from the buzz of the center of town, head to a quiet neighborhood in South Providence.

Dive into Rhode Island’s past and present on your vacation to Providence. You can visit several historical sites that date back to the 18th century such as Governor Henry Lippett House Museum or the John Brown House Museum. Visitors can also view the oldest Baptist Church in the United States as well as read a book from the Athenaeum, a private library built in 1753.

Head over to the Rhode Island State House, which, besides being the state’s capitol, also displays the flag from the lunar landing of Apollo landing as well as the famous full-length portrait of George Washington by Rhode Island’s Gilbert Stuart.

If the portrait of our first president wasn’t enough art for your tastes, fill your senses through the Rhode Island School of Design, one of the top art schools in the United States. Admire student’s artwork displayed in their galleries. During the warmer months, visit the WaterFire, a fiery art display that is installed throughout the year.

Shoppers will be delighted at the shopping opportunities in the center of town at the Providence Place Mall. Dive into history at the Arcade, a glass-enclosed mall built in 1828.

Spend some time outside in the cities at Roger Williams Park and the Roger Williams Park Zoo. The park covers 427-acres and is a perfect spot to grab a picnic in the outdoors.

Take advantage of the small size of the state, and get out of Providence to explore the area. With over 400 miles of coastline, don’t forget to head out to the beach and spend a day playing in the sand at Third Beach in Middletown, Easton’s Beach in Newport, and Blue Shutters Town Beach in Charlestown. Hike on the stunning Cliffwalk in Newport and then explore the nearby town of Warwick.

Allentown’s rich past is on display in city architecture, historic sites, and more. During the Revolutionary War, the Liberty Bell was hidden in Allentown to keep it from falling into the hands of the British. Today, you can explore the history of the bell at the Liberty Bell Museum, which offers an in-depth look at the monument’s past. You can also take a walking tour of Allentown that will take you through downtown’s historic sites and into Old Allentown, which is full of great Victorian architecture.
