Travel to Sapa
The mist-shrouded and mountainous town of Sapa in the Northern Vietnam is a wonderful holiday escape from the rigours and stresses of modern life. Situated 1,500 metres up in the Hoang Lien Son mountain range popularly called the Tonkinese Alps, Sapa is just 38km from the Chinese border. It’s only in relatively recent times that Sapa has been discovered by tourists, and nowadays this breathtaking area attracts people from all over. For your Sapa holidays, you can fly into the capital Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport – the nearest – and take a train from the city, a distance of about 360km.
Sapa has some good hotels in the town centre, including along the main street, and is a great place to base yourself for enjoyment and exploration of the area. Just down from the hilly areas of Sapa is a whole range of low-cost accommodation where you can snag some really good deals. Some villages near to the town are another option for Sapa holidays. The village of Ta Phin in particularly is popular with tourists; it’s around 15km away. If you want to wake up to awe-inspiring views, head further out and there’s a number of accommodation providers whose rooms have stunning vistas of the surrounding countryside.

What to see and do in Sapa ?
You’ll have a blissfully enjoyable time on your Sapa holidays. The countryside, with its verdant ricefields and unfolding mountain views, is spectacular. You’ll feel refreshed by the bracing mountain air and revitalised by staying in a gloriously unspoiled part of the world that you can just amble around and see for yourself.
Because of its elevated position, the climate of Sapa differs from other parts of Vietnam in that it’s subtropical highland. Around the middle of the year the temperature climbs to around 23C and falls to as low as 5C in the first couple of months of the year. It can snow in the town and on the mountain peaks. The wettest time is usually from July until the end of August.
A great way of seeing the place on your Sapa holidays is to go on an organised tour and take it all in, from the panoramic mountain ranges to the picturesque ricefield areas. If you’d rather go at your own place, just set out for a hike or trek.
A popular tourist spot is Sapa Lake, and there you can hire a pedal boat and have some fun. They’re not always available, however, as their operation depends on weather conditions.
Another location popular with the many tourists who visit Sapa is the Silver Waterfall, which is around a half-hour drive from the town. It’s well worth the visit, and particularly spectacular during the rainy season, when it’s literally overflowing. Not far from the waterfall is the incredible sight known as Heaven’s Gate, where you can see the soaring Mt Fansipan – at 3,143 metres high, it’s the tallest in Indochina.
Take a dip – in hot springs near the neighbouring village of Ban Ho. If you’ve been out trekking all day, it’s the perfect way to reward your tired muscles, with a relaxing soak.
For dining options in Sapa, you’ll be spoiled for choice. There are a lot of restaurants in the central areas of town, serving not only traditional Vietnamese fare but also European and Indian dishes. The choice ranges from foodstalls to cheap eateries right up to mid-priced restaurants and top-end.
