A Basel vacation is perfect for couples looking for a romantic retreat and entire families alike. The many historic sites, theaters, and museums combined with the beautiful medieval architecture and lovely mild climate make this Swiss city an amazing cultural experience. You can spend many a sunny day wandering along the banks of the majestic Rhine, simply admiring the cityscape, or pausing in any one of the cafes, restaurants and bars perched along the riverbank to enjoy a refreshing drink with some amazing views. There’s no better way to appreciate Basel’s beauty then a boat tour or cruise at night when the city is lit up like a jewel.

Whatever neighborhood you choose to stay in will add its own unique flavor to your Basel vacation. The Altstadt is the city’s historic heart where you’ll find most of the main sights as well as a good number of great bars, restaurants and cafes. Kleinbasel is where you’ll most visibly see the blend of cultures that make modern Basel what it is today; there are dozens of great little Turkish shops and restaurants in this neighborhood as well as a great brewery right on the river. But if its good beer spots you’re looking for, head over to the hip, up-and-coming Heuwaage district.

The best place to begin your Basel vacation is right in the medieval heart of the city: the Altstadt. Marktplatz, the central square, is lined with dozens of charming, centuries-old buildings whose perfectly maintained facades look like they were lifted straight from a fairytale. Be sure to see the 700-year old Spalentor Gate, a remnant of the city’s original fortifications; it cuts an imposing figure with its fearsome gargoyles.

You can soak up the quaint atmosphere just by strolling through the cobblestoned streets and alleys, or take a trip to the Basel History Museum to gain some more in-depth knowledge of the city’s history. The museums exhibitions feature artifacts from throughout the centuries, starting way back in the pre-Christian era. The Museum Jean Tinguely houses the fascinating works of Basel’s most beloved an eccentric artist; his “kinetic” sculptures will delight visitors of all ages with their swirling and shaking. After your visit to the museum, take a trip to see Tinguely’s Carnival Fountain out in the open air.

The best way to fully appreciate Basel’s beauty is a boat cruise down the Rhine. Whether you choose to cruise around out in the sunshine or book a romantic dinner voyage, you’ll be treated to some great views. There are dozens of cafes and restaurants with outdoor seating along the riverbanks, so you can relax and enjoy a nice meal or drink while soaking up the view of the majestic Rhine.

Make sure you take advantage of some of the best shopping and don’t leave your Basel vacation without a special souvenir. There are dozens of confiseries where you can buy some of Switzerland’s world-famous chocolates, besides other pastries and sweets that look so delicious you’ll have a hard time not eating them before you get on your plane to go home.
