Bern’s laidback pace is different from the rest of Switzerland; the charming, relaxed atmosphere you’ll discover on your Bern vacation makes for a welcome retreat from the hectic hustle of everyday life. In fact the pace here is so slow Bern seems almost frozen in time as the many medieval buildings that make up most of the city have changed little throughout the centuries. Of course, there are many fantastic modern activities for you to partake in- including a great music scene and some great art galleries. However, wandering through the historic town center or enjoying a meal at a riverside café, you might just wonder if you’d wandered into another time, too.

No matter which neighborhood you choose to spend your Bern vacation in, you will be guaranteed an unforgettable trip. The incredible city center seems almost frozen in time, and you’ll have no shortage of amazing historic sites to explore, as well as tons of great restaurants, shops and bars. At night there are some great places to grab a drink and listen to some live music. The Marzili neighborhood along the river is a great place to spend lazy days and romantic nights, eating and drinking at one of the dozens of chic cafes and restaurants along the Aare and soaking up the beautiful views.

When you first step out onto the cobblestone streets lined with picturesque lined with 15th century buildings of the Swiss capital on your Bern vacation, you’ll feel like you’ve walked smack dab in the middle of a postcard. The city’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, serves as a kind of living museum; you’ll get an authentic taste of the past just by wandering around through the squares and alleys that have changed little over the course of 500 years. To fully appreciate Bern’s historic beauty, climb to the top of the Münster cathedral, the tallest in the country; from the spire of this 13th-century church you’ll have an unforgettable panoramic view of the capital.

At the heart of the Old Town is the medieval Zytglogge; it has been a tradition for over 500 years to gather in the square every hour to watch the gilded bell-keeper strike his hammer and ring out the time, along with the mechanical king and his bears. This little show is especially entertaining for younger visitors, who will also enjoy a trip to see some real live bears at the city’s Bärengrabe. The capital actually takes its name from these wonderful animals, and a visit to the Bear Park to see them in the flesh is a delightful experience for visitors of all ages.

Bern has become more famous in recent years for its fantastic nightlife; there are dozens of exciting things to do even after the sun goes down. You can have dinner and drinks overlooking the water at any one of the countless riverside restaurants and bars, most of which have outdoor seating in the warmer weather.
