When most people think of Germany, images of clinking beer steins are usually the first thing to come to mind. Since Cologne has the most pubs per capita in the entire country, consider this city on the Rhine a top choice if that’s the kind of destination you’re looking for. Besides endless opportunities to drink the local kölsch, on your Cologne vacation you’ll have the chance to explore thousands of years of history and get a taste of the vibrant, modern life that defines Germany today. The perfect blend of traditional and innovative, a Cologne vacation is guaranteed to delight.

Like any other city, Cologne is made up of several neighborhoods each with a different, unique flavor. The downtown district known as the “Ring” is a hub of activity all hours of the day and night. With its countless clubs, restaurants and bars, it offers 24-hour distractions. The Südstadt is good if you’re more interested in cultural pursuits on your Cologne vacation: it is home to two theaters and many live music venues. The Uni Viertel university neighborhood is popular among the city’s younger inhabitants, and also brimming with lively bars, pubs and cafes.

This medieval city was rebuilt after suffering extensive damage during the Second World War, resulting in an eclectic blend of baroque and modern architecture you can admire on your Cologne vacation. The most famous landmark is the famous Cologne Cathedral. This building took seven centuries to construct, has amazingly survived to the present day despite suffering fourteen direct hits during the bombing, and is an amazing example of Gothic architecture. It also contains the Shrine of the Three Kings, which is said to hold the remains of the Three Wise Men, which were brought back to Germany by Federick Barbarossa.

Cologne is also an important cultural center and is home to dozens of fascinating museums and galleries. The Roman-Germanic Museum showcases artifacts from the city’s ancient past and the Museum Ludwig boasts an impressive collection of Picassos: more than anywhere except Paris and Barcelona. Perhaps the most famous product to come out of the city is Eau de Cologne, the perfume created by Johann Maria Farina in the 1700s. The perfume is still manufactured by the Farina family in the city today, and you can visit the Farina Fragrance Museum, where it was first produced back in 1709.

If you’re less interested in perfume and more inclined to enjoy a crisp, cold beer then rejoice: Cologne has the most pubs per capita in all of German, which is really saying something. Don’t leave without sampling some of the delicious local brew: the world-famous kölsch. There are dozens of breweries you can visit throughout the city, some of which have been operating for over a hundred years. Most of the pubs also serve mouth-watering traditional German food, so don’t miss out on the opportunity to try some authentic German-style sausage, potatoes and sauerkraut. Of course, the best way to enjoy a kölsch is in a biergarten overlooking the Rhine with a fantastic view of the cathedral.
