If you don’t want to choose between gorgeous beaches, fascinating historic sites, and a vibrant nightlife on your next trip, a Lisbon vacation is perfect for you. This stunning European capital with its thousand-year history is the ideal vacation destination for history lovers, cultural aficionados and beach bums alike. The remnants of the Romans and Moors can still be seen throughout the city, and these diverse influences through the centuries have resulted in the unique culture you will find in Lisbon today. So whether you want to spend lazy days soaking up the sun, exploring medieval palaces, or dancing every night until dawn, a Lisbon vacation is perfect for you.

Each one of the capital’s neighborhoods has its own unique, exciting flavor, and is sure to add something special to your Lisbon vacation. Baixa, the city’s shopping hub, is filled with some of the city’s best-preserved and most beautiful- buildings, as well as shops selling every type of good imaginable. Chic Chiado is the perfect place to stop for a coffee on a sunny day, and the views from the Elevador de Santa Justa are unforgettable. You can really get a feel for the ancient heart of Lisbon in Alfama, the oldest part of the city. The Moorish influences are still visible in the architecture and the centerpiece of the neighborhood is the majestic castle.

There’s no shortage of scenic vistas for you to enjoy on your Lisbon vacation. It’s one of the only few European capitals where you can enjoy views of a romantic sunset on the beach, fairytale palaces nestled among the hills, and Romanesque villas against an ocean backdrop.

Needless to say, with its incredible history that stretches back to before the arrival of the Romans, Lisbon has an incredible variety of different museums and historic buildings where you can experience the past firsthand. The Toy Museum is a unique museum that families with children can take advantage of, featuring 3000-year old toys from ancient Egypt, toy soldiers from the Second World War, and Christmas gifts to royal children from throughout the centuries.

You should not leave the capital without visiting at least one of its stunning and amazingly well- preserved palaces. The National Palace dates from the 14th century and is an incredible mixture of Moorish and Gothic architecture. Pena Palace is slightly younger, dating from the mid-19th-century, but no less majestic. Meant to resemble a medieval castle, it seems like something straight out of a fairytale with its imposing turrets, gargoyles, drawbridge, and beautifully furnished rooms that look exactly as the royal family left them.

If you’re less inclined to immerse yourself in the past and want to spend your Lisbon enjoying the present, you’ll have no shortage of nightclubs, bars, cafes and restaurants to choose from. You can while away the midday hours sipping hot coffee or cold beer on the balcony of a café overlooking the sea, listen to some traditional fado music at a restaurant while you enjoy your dinner, then spend your time until the sun comes up in one of the countless bars, pubs or nightclubs in the downtown heart of the city.
