London, the capital of both the United Kingdom and England, is one of the most historically rich and culturally and politically significant cities in the world. With historic sites like Parliament, Big Ben, Westminster Abbey, Tower Bridge and St. Paul’s Cathedral, a walk through history is never far away. London is also a city of ideas, with a history of theatrical, artistic, literary and technological innovation. London is also home to some of the world’s greatest museums and galleries, as well as fantastic shopping and some of the UK’s hottest nightlife spots.

Piccadilly Circus, in London’s West End, is one of the best areas to stay – you have easy access to the underground and are walking distance from many of London’s main attractions, including the famous Trafalgar square and the Piccadilly Theater. Knightsbridge/Chelsea is historically an important area for arts and culture – it is home to some of the best upscale shopping in London, the Carlyle House, Bram Stoker’s House and the world famous Hyde Park. Westminster is a beautiful area in the heart of London and home to some of the city’s most iconic monuments, including Westminster Abbey, Parliament and Buckingham Palace.

London is a city of art, culture, architecture, good food, great nightlife, the theater, high fashion and design and some of the world’s most important financial centers. More than 300 languages are spoken daily on London’s streets, and visitors can eat food, listen to music and see fashion trends from around the world.

For fine art lovers, London rivals any city on the globe. Most museums can be accessed for free, but visitors are asked to make a donation to help maintain the collections. The National Gallery is a must-visit museum, housing some of the best works of impressionist art in the world. Other museums that no one should miss include the Victoria and Albert museum, with an extensive collection of art from around the world, the British Museum, home to the friezes of the Acropolis, the Tate Modern and the Tate Britain, the latter housing the most extensive collection of British art in the world, the Natural History museum near Knightsbridge and literally hundreds of others. For literati, you can see the Globe Theatre, only 750 feet from the site where Hamlet and Macbeth were first performed in London, and the extensive collection of ancient and modern British literary works in the Sir John Ritblat Gallery of the British Library.

Temperatures in London are relatively mild year-round, though late summer and early fall are probably the best times of the year for a visit. The city has a bad reputation for weather, but it rains only about 33% of the year, usually for a short time. The city is especially charming around the Christmas season, where decorations give the whole city a magical glow, and a warm jacket and good gloves are normally all that’s needed to keep off the cold. If you forget anything at home, never fear; London’s many shopping districts are sure to have just what you’re looking for.

London’s food and nightlife, in central London and throughout the city, are known throughout the world. Everything from the iconic fish and chips to some of the best Indian food available outside of the subcontinent and everything in between is available in London’s many restaurants, with fancy fusion restaurants and excellent, cheap street food in abundance, so that there’s a culinary delight for every budget.

Perhaps the best part of a vacation to London is free. Strolling along the Thames at twilight, soaking up the city’s pulse and history, treading the footsteps of some of the giants of world history, you will be overwhelmed with a sublime feeling comparable to the quiet grandeur Wordsworth felt above the ruins at Tintern Abbey.
