How do you get the cheapest tickets to Palermo ?

One of the lesser traveled vacation spots in Sicily, Palermo is truly a city visitors need to explore. The treasures of Sicily’s capital are hidden and secret instead of put on display like in metropolitan areas such as Rome, which makes it the perfect puzzle for you to solve and discover. Palermo is the picture of multiculturalism, which can be seen in the Arab, Byzantine, Norman, Renaissance and baroque architectural fusions that make up the area, a style that has been dubbed “The Arab-Norman style of Sicily.”

Quattro Canti – or The Four Corners – is a popular quarter for sightseers to stay in on a Palermo vacation. Located at the intersection of Corso Vittorio Emanuelle and Via Maqueda, it is the heart of the city and so contains many of Palermo’s not-so-hidden gems like the Royal Palace and the Palatine Chapel. There are many comfortable and affordable hotels in the area because of the centrality of the district and because Quattro Canti boasts many churches and ruins as well as many bars and restaurants. It is the perfect, most accommodating and central place to stay and explore throughout Palermo.

For people who crave adventure and discovery, Palermo is the perfect place to visit; the city does not pander to non-locals. Many restaurants do not have translated menus, a few places in the old square have not been renovated since the city was bombed in the war, but what Palermo can offer is a complete immersion in its way of life – it is a city of character and a mystery to unfold for any willing outsider.

The markets are a prime feature of Sicily’s capital, the most famous one being La Vucciria, which means “voices.” From dawn until early afternoon, around 2 pm, Monday through Saturday, La Vucciria sells various kinds of fresh seafood, herbs and local produce all under a verbal cloud of haggling. Another market, a mecca for street eaters, is Ballaro, which is primarily a food market but also sells clothes.

Like many cities in Italy, Palermo has an abundance of churches but because of its colorful and ever-changing history, they are not of one century or one religion or one style. There are converted mosques and baroque structures. A popular church is the Cathedral of Palermo, which is reputed for incorporating many different styles because of constant add-ons and renovations and modifications starting as early as the 1100s. In one building you will find Gothic, Romanesque, baroque and modern styles.

Of course for a more classic vacation, you can always venture down to Palermo’s coastline and enjoy the blue-green water of the beaches you will find there. Snorkeling is a popular activity at these beaches because the seafloor is full of seaweed, creating the perfect environment for many small fish and sea creatures, which are fun and beautiful to see beneath the water. Mondello Beach is the largest one in Palermo and it is the closest to the city.

Whether you plan on enjoying those Sicilian rays or traditional Sicilian dishes, enjoy the best of the island with a vacation to Palermo.
