No matter which of the city’s unique neighborhoods you choose to stay in on your Seville vacation, you are guaranteed an enjoyable experience. Historic Macarena on the banks of the Guadalquivir is home to some of the city’s most important monuments, including the Basilica of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza Macarena, as well as the oldest Tapas bar in Europe, which dates back to the late 1600s. The Casco Antiguo is the heart of the city where you’ll find the cathedral and Alcázar. The University of Seville is also located here, which means there are plenty of places to go after the sun goes down.

No matter which of the city’s unique neighborhoods you choose to stay in, you are guaranteed a great experience on your Seville vacation. The Centro Histórico is the heart of the old city and where you’ll find some of the most famous historical attractions, including the gigantic cathedral. This area also boasts a large number of restaurants, shops and bars you can pass the time in. The former Jewish ghetto of Barrio Santa Cruz is filled with chic cafes, fascinating art galleries and amazing architectural attractions, including the city’s distinctive courtyards with their Andalusian fountains.

There is no better place to see the influences of the city’s Muslim rulers than the Real Alcázar. This stunning Moorish palace is the oldest royal palace still in use on the entire continent; King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia still reside on the upper levels with their family. You could spend days exploring the different rooms and gorgeous gardens replete with courtyards, ponds and flowerbeds; the palace is so vast and the architecture so dazzling you won’t be bored for a second. Don’t miss out on this chance to see the room where Christopher Columbus met with King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella to plan his legendary voyage across the Atlantic.

Make sure you take some time to enjoy a Flamenco performance on your Seville vacation. You can watch this fiery dance in dozens of venues throughout the city, but the best place to learn about its origins is the Museo del Baile Flamenco, where you’ll be able to admire art and exhibitions dedicated to the dance, as well as a live performance.

For another authentic Spanish experience, visit the Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza, the world’s oldest bullfighting ring. Although the stadium itself is incredible and an important historic site, be forewarned: this spectacle is not for the faint of heart. More squeamish visitors can choose to tour the arena and visit the adjoining museum, but if you have the stomach for it don’t pass up the opportunity to watch an epic man versus beast battle.

Although it’s steeped in tradition, modern-day Seville has a vibrancy and energy all its own. This Spanish city has more pars per capita than any other in Europe, and is famed for its thrilling nightlife: most people don’t even eat dinner until ten or eleven and the wildest partygoers don’t head home until seven or eight the next morning.
