Travel to Tashkent
When visiting Uzbekistan, Tashkent is a logical choice. With influences of Turkic and Sogdian cultures, the city was founded in the 8th century.
Genghis Khan caused the city’s destruction in the 13th century, but it was rebuilt and became an influential stop on the ancient Silk Road. Much of its modern growth, however, can be attributed to its time under the supervision of the Soviet Union.
In 1917, a revolution destroyed much of the city once again. A 1966 earthquake helped to finish off many of the ancient buildings and structures. There are, however, some fantastic main sights that are worth seeing during your stay.
Your first stop should be the Chorsu Bazaar. It can be found in the center of the city and is one of the largest open-air markets you will ever see. If you can imagine it, then you’ll likely find at least one vendor offering it for sale here.
A visit to the Khast Imam Mosque should be on your itinerary as well. It is the home of the world’s oldest extant Qur’an and is dated to 655. It was seized by the Russians as a war trophy, but returned to the mosque in 1924.
The Kukeldash Madrasah was built in the 16th century by the Shaybanid Dynasty and is close to the bazaar. Built of yellow brick, it features the traditional square design, a large portal, and a stunning inner yard.
