Travel to Venice

Venice is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world today. The iconic images that come from the gondolas floating down the cities many canals fill people with ideas of wonder, romance, and adventure that no other city has the ability to produce. Small, hidden squares are complimented by modern luxury and World Heritage Sites to provide a truly engaging experience.

The 118 islands that compose the city have been occupied since at least the 10th century BC and should be seen at least once by everyone. If you have Venice on your mind, then here are a few of the essentials that this city has to offer for your upcoming visit. Include these and you may just find that you can call this city your best friend!

With 150 Good Sites, Where Do You Start?

Venice is a city that you’ve got to see in small pieces because of the overwhelming nature of the many historical sites that are available. One of the first places to go, however, has to be the Palazzo Ducale. The galleries within the walls are absolutely breathtaking and something that will speak to the inner strength of the human soul throughout the generations.

A stop at the Basilica di San Marco should also be in your plans just for the architectural achievement this building really is. Built in the 9th century, the story goes that the body of Mark, one of the disciples of Jesus, was smuggled out of Egypt in a barrel of pork lard so it would avoid a customs inspection.

Visit a Gallery

Being such an important part of the Renaissance movement, Venice has a number of galleries and art museums. While the city itself and its architecture is a piece of art, there are a number of modern art galleries which serve as an interesting experience in a city that is filled with history.

The Palazzo Grassi is a definite must see for culture vultures and art lovers alike as it offers world class installations and exhibitions, as is the Peggy Guggenheim Collection which is one of the city’s most important museums. You’ll find it right on the Grand Canal and you can’t miss the entrance to it. There are massive sculptures that are at the dock of this 18th century palace. Inside you’ll find a number of artistic exhibits, many of them modern and contemporary, and there are often concerts outside right along the canal.

See a Palazzo

Being a city that was filled with wealth, especially throughout the Renaissance period, Venice boasts over 200 palazzis, or palaces. While it is possible to locate all of these wonderful buildings, if you are short of time, make sure to visit the Palazzo Ducale, or Doge’s palace as it is also known as.

In the Palazzo’s courtyard you will be able to see Antonio Rizzo’s Scala dei Giganti as well as Sansovino’s statues of Neptune and Apollo which are all equally breathtaking. Again, the building’s rather solemn purpose in history is shown here in the courtyard by the Poggi (wells) which are situated on the east side, which is where prisoners would be held.

What Will You Discover in the Streets of Venice?

All along the alleyways of Venice you’ll find pubs and clubs that are all quietly begging for you to stop inside and have a pint. If you can tear yourself away from a cold sandwich or two, head over to A Beccafico for a bowl of mussels that seems simple, yet has very complex flavors. You’ll also find zero cheese on this menu and if you’re feeling brave, try the squid ink pasta that’s made fresh in the restaurant.

For more of a traditional approach, you might also consider an evening at Osteria alla Staffa. The seafood on the menu is brought in fresh every morning from the Rialto and most of the sourced ingredients are organic in nature. There are a number of modern takes on traditional dishes here… and you’ll find cheese on the menu.

Venice has a number of wonderful sights and sounds that will leave an indelible impression on you. Plan your trip today and you’ll have one of the best adventures of your life in this city!

Best of Venice

What to see and do in Venice ?

One of the most romantic locations in the world, Venice had captured the imaginations of artists and filmmakers for hundreds of years. The intricate canal ways, gondola rides and winding paths make this a gem of a place to visit. Take in the sight that people travel thousands of kilometres for, with fabulous historical hotels overlooking the historic Grand Canal and iconic Gothic architecture. Bathed in light in the summer and with a haunting allure in the winter, ‘The Floating City’ is one of the must-see places for any visitor.

The rich and famous have an obsession with Venice, and it’s easy to understand why. Fabulous world-class hotels and colourful boutique guesthouses surround the popular parts of the city. Day trippers miss out on the magic of Venice in the evening hours, so stay central. Many of the most opulent hotels are located near Saint Mark’s Square and the Riva Degli Schiavoni, but on the other side of the Grand Canal and San Polo are many unique little hideaways perfect for those wishing to escape the crowds.

Visit St Mark’s Square, the principal public square of Venice, which is a breath-taking area of the city that has long been popular with tourists and is a must-see location. There are many beautiful bars and cafés surrounding the square and when it is lit up in the evening, the view alone is worth the trip to Venice. Relax with a glass of carefully chosen red wine, paired with your meal.

One of the icons of Venice is the Venetian gondola boat. A romantic evening can be spent floating along the waters of Venice in these slick black lagoon boats. Make sure you pass the bridge of sighs as a local legend tells that if two lovers share a kiss as they pass the bridge they will be granted eternal love.

Walking around the city can often be the most rewarding way to find some of the incredible Gothic architecture that can be found across the whole of Venice. Get lost among the elegant Byzantine style arches and intricate pathways of the Floating City for a truly enchanting experience.

Enjoy a spot of retail therapy as Venice offers some fascinating boutique shops selling everything from top quality Italian cashmere to vintage and even handmade jewellery. Try on the traditional Venetian masks, taste the divine Italian pastries or visit the street markets for a veritable feast for the eyes and ears as vendors sell the freshest fish, vegetables and herbs in the city.

Visit the Gallerie dell’Academia to witness a rich collection of Venetian art, displaying many important Renaissance works from artists that have influenced the world. The building is gradually falling apart the way many are in Venice, but there is still time to view the stupendous art inside.

Events in Venice

January: Top of the tree for events in Venice is it legendary carnival. Held late January/early February, the world’s oldest masked ball has been held since the middle ages. This two week party is a real experience.

April: In April children take to the streets with pots and wooden spoons to celebrate Festa di San Marco. They chant and make as much noise as they can in exchange for tokens which are traded for sweet treats.

October: Being so famous for its waterways you would think a Marathon in Venice would be difficult, but you’d be wrong. Held in October the runners start outside the city in Stra before making their way into St Mark’s Square.

December/January: It is opera season in Venice. Be sure to book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
