According to legend, the city of Warsaw got its name from a fisherman who married a mermaid that he met out at sea. Actually named after a 12 century nobleman, the city of Warsaw has survived so many wars that it has the nickname of the “Phoenix City” because it always seems to rise up from the ashes.

Almost completely rebuilt after World War II because 85% of the city was destroyed. It is a central economic and commerce hub of Central Europe and is heavily influential in the areas of theater, media, and film.

Find Tranquility at Lazienki Park

Built by King Stanislaw August Poniatowski in the latter half of the 18th century, the gardens at Lazienki Park features a neoclassical palace, spacious gardens, ponds, canals, and fountains. The King himself was a pretty poor politician, but he had a love for art and it still shows today in terms of the construction and composition of the grounds. Be careful walking under the trees because you’re almost certain to find at least one peacock residing in one! Beautiful in every season, there are regular concerts that are held on the grounds during the Summer. If you’re hungry, you can even grab a bite to eat at the Belvederskaya.

Get In Touch with the Gestapo

The Gestapo Headquarters museum is a perfect addition to the Warsaw sightseeing tour. It only takes a few minutes to go through the exhibits, but the coldness and cruelty of the building and what you see is enough to last for a lifetime. It was the original interrogation center for the Gestapo, and when it was converted into a museum, everything was left the way that it was found. It even includes bullet holes in the walls of the cells that housed prisoners. Not many attractions or museums have an impact on people like this one does.

Find the Heart of Warsaw in Old Town

Though it was completely rebuilt because of the razing it received in World War II, you can still get a feel of what Warsaw was like throughout history. As the heart of the city, you’ll be able to enjoy street performers, locally crafted beer, and amazing architecture. Enjoy an evening with local cuisine specials and get a real sense of what the city was like before its destruction in World War II. The Polish people are a proud people and many areas of the local market saw some of the heaviest fighting within the city thanks to the resistance of the Underground Army. Shop, look around, and marvel at Warsaw has become.
