Ypres is a Belgian community that has roots in antiquity. It was raided by the Romans in the first century and is mentioned by name in the 11th century. It has been a prosperous city through every era thanks to local linen manufacturing, though it has been rebuilt several times due to fires and warfare.
Despite the rebuilding, the visual aesthetics of Ypres make it a visually impressive community. Because of the various wars that have been fought there, many consider the streets to be hallowed ground. Families of soldiers still make a pilgrimage to Ypres on a regular basis to remember their loved ones and “share in the sufferings” of the lost.
The Cloth Hall does not allow itself to be ignored when visiting the town center of Ypres. Initially constructed in the 13th century, it was one of the world’s largest commercial buildings during the Medieval era. The rebuilt structure is an exact copy of the building that stood during the Middle Ages and has been a designated world heritage site since 1999.
Another stop that was completely reconstructed is Saint Martin’s Cathedral, which has a higher spire, but the same attractive Gothic styling. Tombs of Robert of Bethune and Jansenius are located on the grounds.
A final stop at the Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing commemorates the soldiers who fell in the first world war and do not have a known grave. The names of more than 54,000 soldiers and men are engraved on the gate. Every evening at 8pm, traffic around the arches of the gate is stopped as Last Post is sounded. It’s a tradition that has been held nightly, with few exceptions, since 1928.
